An Advent Conference in Dresden – with Weimar as a Day Trip
For a larger-scale Advent format, Dresden ranks among Germany’s most reliable choices. The Internationales Congress Center Dresden offers capacity for up to 6,800 delegates, set on the southern bank of the Elbe right next to the old town. Groups looking for a smaller setting will find plenty of options among the conference hotels in Dresden, many within walking distance of the Zwinger, the Residenzschloss and the Frauenkirche.
The Dresden Striezelmarkt as a supporting programme
The Dresden Striezelmarkt (25 November to 24 December 2026) ranks among Germany’s oldest and best-known Christmas markets and sits centrally on the Altmarkt – all without the group ever needing to leave the city. The Christmas Garden in the Großer Garten (19 November 2026 to 10 January 2027) adds a light installation well suited to an evening programme away from the market crowds.
Weimar as a compact day trip
For a cultural counterpoint, Weimar is about two hours away by train. Its entire old town, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Classical Weimar”, can be explored on foot, and the Weimarer Weihnacht (24 November 2026 to 3 January 2027) spreads across several squares, creating a noticeably more intimate mood than the large-scale Striezelmarkt. Smaller conference formats can also use the Weimarhalle, with up to 1,200 seats in its main hall.
Two approaches work well: run the whole conference in Dresden with Weimar as a guided day trip, or – for smaller groups – hold a standalone format directly in Weimar.
Looking for a different format?
Not every group suits eastern Germany. Anyone after a similar combination of large capacity and a directly reachable second destination in the south will find it between Nuremberg and Augsburg, also linked directly by ICE – in this case in just around 70 minutes. More on that, and on the western pair of Aachen and Münster, in our overview of Advent meetings in Germany.
A planning checklist for Dresden
- Decide on the format first: a Dresden-only conference, a day trip to Weimar, or a standalone format in Weimar.
- Enquire early: dates around the Striezelmarkt are typically booked out months in advance.
- Plan travel time realistically: around an hour to Weimar – manageable as a day programme, but worth building into the schedule.
- Time the supporting programme carefully: both a Striezelmarkt visit and the Christmas Garden fit comfortably into an evening slot.
