The Zibelemärit onion market belongs to Bern as much as its old town, and in 2026 it falls on a Monday: 23 November. For companies that have not yet booked their Christmas party, that is good news twice over. A market with centuries of tradition, right in the city centre, can be woven into the evening without extra organisational effort, and a weekday like Monday still has considerably more free capacity in many Bern hotels than a December Friday.

A company that enquires about its Bern Christmas party now, in October, has a clear edge over companies that only become active in November, as a look at the Swiss portal of MICE Service Group shows, with several regions competing for the same December dates. The following sections show which group size can realistically still find a hall on which weekday, and how the Zibelemärit can be used deliberately as a ready-made activity.

Bern hotels do not sell their December dates only once Advent begins. Companies with large teams often reserve as early as summer, smaller teams tend to follow in August and September. By early October, the popular Fridays and the first two weeks of December are frequently already taken in many venues around the station and the old town, which inevitably pushes remaining options towards quieter weekdays.

There is also an effect that is often overlooked: more and more companies now combine the party with a short year-end review or a small team recognition moment, which further tightens demand for the same popular early-evening slots. Anyone planning this should mention it in the first enquiry, so the hall is reserved with the right layout from the start.

The Zibelemärit traditionally falls on the fourth Monday of November, which in 2026 is 23 November, and fills Bern’s entire old town with onion braids, market stalls and confetti fights. For a Christmas party, that means a shared walk before the formal part of the evening needs no separate booking and no dedicated supplier, as long as the hotel is close to the old town.

It is worth telling the hotel about the market visit when making the enquiry, so arrival time in the hall and the kitchen’s menu timing can be planned accordingly. For teams that otherwise mostly meet online, such a walk through the illuminated old town often does more for cohesion than a separately organised activity that would need booking in its own right. Companies unable to use 23 November will find a convenient alternative in the Basel Christmas market, running from 26 November to 23 December 2026, should the party take place there instead. Further Bern events around the year-end are listed in the site’s events overview.

Even companies not choosing the Zibelemärit Monday itself benefit from the calendar: celebrating on one of the surrounding weekdays still means enjoying the festive lighting and mood in the old town, which is already noticeable from late November, without being tied to the market day itself. That way the date can follow the team’s internal availability without giving up the seasonal atmosphere.

Availability depends heavily on headcount. A realistic picture of the coming weeks:

Friday evenings are the most requested slot for Christmas parties and are therefore booked out first. Considerably more choice remains on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays – the Zibelemärit Monday itself is still overlooked by many companies, despite being the most obvious date for a Bern party with a built-in activity. Thursday is also a good alternative for teams that already work reduced hours the following day.

A side effect many people overlook: hotels often confirm enquiries for less popular weekdays within hours, since no internal check against competing bookings is needed. For a December Friday, a reply can take several days instead, while the venue checks whether a larger or more lucrative group has requested the same date.

On the weekday, flexibility almost always pays off, since the programme adapts easily. On the venue, it only pays off to a point: a hall without daylight or with awkward access to the old town affects the overall impression far more than a shifted weekday, particularly if the Zibelemärit walk is meant to be part of the evening. The menu can almost always be renegotiated, since kitchens in December are set up for efficient standard menus for larger groups anyway. Companies wanting to combine the Zibelemärit walk with a further activity will find more ideas in the activity programmes around Bern.

The least room for manoeuvre lies in the speed of the enquiry itself: a company that needs two weeks for internal sign-off on budget and headcount often loses the right date to a competitor that decided faster. A company that only enquires in November usually has just one or two offers to compare, while an enquiry now typically brings in three to five offers that can be compared on cloakroom service, a welcome drink, or room hire.

A further point worth checking is step-free access: at short-notice fallback venues, some rooms in Bern’s historic old town sit in buildings without a lift. This is usually settled with one quick question before confirming, avoiding awkward surprises for guests with limited mobility on the day.

Booking late does not automatically mean paying more, but it shifts the negotiating room. Venues that have not yet filled their December weeks tend to be more willing at this stage to include small extras at no charge, such as a flexible cancellation deadline or a free rebooking if the guest count changes. This goodwill usually disappears once a venue is fully booked for the date in question. Being open about enquiring with several hotels in parallel also tends to speed up a binding reply, since venues are then more inclined to commit early.

Two more things are worth settling at the same time: how easily the hotel can be reached from Bern station for guests without a car, and whether overnight rooms are needed for team members travelling from other cantons. Both can be raised in a single sentence in the first enquiry, saving separate calls later, especially for colleagues who would like to combine the Zibelemärit evening with an overnight stay in Bern.

Why OctoberIs the Last Good Moment
