Taking the night train to a business meeting \u2013 experience report<\/h2>\n

Are you traveling by night train for the first time? What can you expect? Here is a personal experience report on the route Basel – Hamburg, sometime in January.<\/p>\n

\u00abSince I had traveled by night train before, I knew roughly what to expect. At that time it was a 6-person compartment. I am campingerprobt, but one does not become younger. Today it was going to be a single cabin. After all, I was going to a business meeting in Hamburg and I wanted to arrive reasonably rested, which could be difficult with six people in a compartment and especially noisy. My journey starts in Basel. Shortly after 10 p.m. the train arrives on time, coming from Zurich. Wagon found, cabin occupied, the first impression of my bunk – nice. I am greeted with a small bottle of sparkling wine, water and a welcome package filled with snacks, slippers and earplugs. Comfortable.<\/em><\/p>\n

I stow my suitcase, discover the washstand, find the power outlet and look forward to a freshly made bed. But before it is time, the train attendant comes and takes my breakfast order. Wow, I think, comfort category seems to be worth it.<\/em><\/p>\n

The door can be locked several times, so I mount my earplugs with a clear conscience. I fit comfortably into the bed and am happy for the first time to belong to the smaller sort of man. A 2-meter man would probably have some difficulties. The night is quiet, sometimes jerky but better than expected. Of course one sleeps better in one’s own bed. But every now and then I nod off and the body rests anyway. It’s all a question of attitude.<\/em><\/p>\n

One hour before the destination station Hamburg I get my self-chosen breakfast and start after punctual arrival freshly strengthened and recovered to my business appointment in Hamburg. The return trip went just as smoothly. Hence my conclusion: I will do it again. But only in comfort mode.\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n
