Viamala Gorge – imposing and impressive

Rocks up to 300 meters high form the Viamala (Via mala, Romansh for “bad way”). Despite its narrowness, despite the threat of falling rocks and dangerous waters, the gorge offered muleteers and travelers the best access to the Alpine passes Splügen and San Bernardino. Later, towards the end of the 19th century, philosophers and writers, such as Nietzsche and Fontane, also visited the gorge and were fascinated by this natural spectacle.

Since 1903, the Viamala Gorge has been accessible via a visitor center and steps. A few years later, an adventurous tunnel blasted into the rock face followed, which still leads to the visitor platform. Equipped with a treasure map, children discover the gorge and its stories and search for the Viamala treasure. Those who like to hike will set out on the ViaSpluga mule track that starts in Thusis. This classic among long-distance hikes leads through the Viamala and Roffla gorges and along stony paths over the Splügen Pass to Chiavenna in Italy. The 65-kilometer ViaSpluga is usually hiked in four daily stages. But even for a few hours, the Viamala Gorge offers your participants an unforgettable natural spectacle.
